Washed the engine with degreaser. Checked spark plugs. They seem gray with carbon not really orange at all. I cleaned them with carb cleaner and wire brush and put them back. I’m doing too many short trips and it fouls them up. Idle screws at 2.7/8ths.

Replaced the Chinese front bearing with allballz bearing. Opened up the rear wheel bearings, removed excess grease. Cleaned and put new grease in much smaller quantity. They seem to rotate a little more freely. Will replace them soon. I really don’t understand why the fuel consumption became so low. I remember riding in hot weather last month and it was close to 5L and now it’s 4.2L in 23C weather. This time I went for 100km ride on stable Hwy speed. It seems that running this engine cold on short distances is the most likely reason for high fuel consumption. Rear tire is super soft. I don’t like it. It’s too narrow for the rim.

Short trips to work and back. 80% in the city. Idle screw is at 2.5/8th turns out. Starting ok. Choke is needed on warm days for 2km. When engine fully hot the sound is kinda rich. I may have to lower the mixture to 2.5 turns for the summer.

Idle is at 2.5/8 now. I lowered it slightly because 2.3/4 turns out was sounding too rich when the engine is fully warmed up. The current setting however feels just right when the engine is hot even though it does take slightly longer to warm up the engine holding the choke on for a bit longer. Gotta play with the jet needle a bit to enrich the mid rpm range. Main jet is ok, but needles need to be slightly different to make the 3000-4000 rpm pull smoothly.

Set the idle screws to 2.3/4 turns out. I’m leaving them like that for ease of remembering.

Cleaned the chain fully to a spotless level with first the simple green; dried: then powerful blast of ipon chain cleaner that brought it to a supremely clean state. I let it evaporate the chain cleaner and proceeded to wipe off the chain with a clean paper towel to the point where there were were little dust left on it. Carefully protecting the tire and the muffler I proceeded to apply the ipon chain grease in short even streams making sure to cover the inside of the chain and the side. Then I did the same thing but from the other side of the chain to make sure the chain grease covers both sides of the chain. I then started the bike on a center stand and span the wheel for 30 seconds to make sure that the grease really penetrates all the nooks and crannies of the chain and rollers while the centripetal force pushed the grease out to spill over the outside of the chain. It’s so perfect that when the wheel spins I can’t hear the chain links spinning around the sprockets. Rear sprocket was cleaned thoroughly as well. Rear rim and some dirty spokes were cleaned with kerosene.

Right after this fuel up I installed a 16 tooth engine sprocket. Cleaned the sprocket area. Updated the tension of the chain. Oiled the chain.

Cleaned the chain very thoroughly and lubed it with gear oil. Temperature outside is 7-9C in the morning and 14-19C in the afternoon. Using lots of choke to warm up the engine. Engine warm up is very slow and it takes a twist of throttle to kick start the bike on choke. I think I need to revert back to 2.5 turns out on both idle screws and balance the carbs.

Inspected the spark plugs and found that they looked normal and without any significant deposits anywhere. Electrode colour is gray and insulator is very light brown. Then I realized that these plugs are old! (They worked because I gapped them correctly) I replaced them with freshly washed brand new plugs. I can hear less hiccups and it warms up better still at 2.3/8ths turns.

Adjusted chain tension. Installed usb phone charger. Carbs still at 2.3/8 outside temperature is about 6 to 10 Celsius. Lengthy choke warmups up to 2km long. Engine hesitation when cold is noticeable. It looks like I need to put it back to 2.5 turns out.

Figuring out if the carb adjustment of 2.5 turns out is good or not. Small part of this distance the carbs were set at 2.3/8th turns.

I set the idle screws to 2.5 turns out and the bike really liked that. The bike warms up much faster than on 2.1/4 turns before; however, when the bike is fully warmed up I could feel just a tad of hesitation sometimes and the exhaust smells like gasoline. I need to revert back a bit and try the factory recommendation 2.3/8 turns which is half of quarter turn back in from 2.5 turns.

The bike wasn’t running right. It was running too rich with lot’s of vibration on all rpm’s. Idle screws had nothing to do with it. I took off the carbs again and realized that I swapped the main jet needles between cylinders. This caused the richness and vibrations. After that I rechecked and adjusted the floats and put back the 2.1/8 turns out for idle screws. The main vibrations at speed were gone and solved, but the idle was too lean with lots of shaking popping sounds on deceleration. So I put the idle setting back to 2.1/4 turns out. The bike likes this setting a lot more. Vibes are almost gone, but idle is still too lean and the bike takes a long time to warm up. I’ll leave it like that for now. Need to check out the fuel economy at this setting. I think I’ll set the idle screws at 2.3/8 later.
