Washed the bike thoroughly from road salt. Opened the engine sprocket cover and cleaned the grime. Washed the chain and sprockets with simple green and wiped with kerosene. Drained the carbs and fuel tank. Poured motor oil into the tank to preserve it.

Dec 4 2024

Last fill up of 2024. It’s December and the temperature is around 3C. The roads are wet and dark. After this fill up I went an additional 120km of mainly riding to T’s and back. I’m afraid of black ice as the sun sets at 4:15pm now. The dark time are here. I’m sad, but not as sad as last few years at this time. I’m looking forward to winter maintenance. I have to check the wiring harness for shorts. True the rear wheel and replace its bearings. Clean out the air box and put it back together. It has a lot of grime and sand in there. Replace the head cover gasket and check the valves while there. The petcock is leaky and probably needs to be replaced. New orings didn’t help. Rear fender cracks need to be welded together with lead. New #120 main jets will need to be installed. Air filters washed again. Tank needs another cleaning, but I don’t think I can do a better job than last time. Tank needs trueing an touch up. Front breaks need to be rebuilt. General observation; the pipes don’t have buffers and they sound great, but they are too loud and it’s annoying. I will never modify the sock exhaust.

Serviced the air filters. They were clogged with emulsion from rain mist. You truly have to wash the air filters after every rain. Bike is in full running condition. Accelerator pump diagram that I ordered from Ali is too small and will have to be replaced.

As the temperature lowered to below 18c I noticed that The bike would take a long time to warm up and stall right after I turned off the choke and start riding for 200m. To ameliorate the denser air I put the idle screws back to 2.3/4 turns out and installed brand new hotter temperature range (7e) spark plugs. The bike no longer stalls and warms up faster. I see no discernible change in engine temperature. Maybe it warms up a little faster from cold as I ride? I did notice the heat from the engine head did increase a little, but I’m not certain. I hope that hotter plugs will help with efficiency. Time will tell. I feel good that the plugs will fit better to my stop and go in cold weather type of riding. I don’t see any issues with riding on a highway with hotter plugs so far.

Got robbed by a Centex gas station. Idle is at 2.5/8th out. The warm up takes 50% longer. Power seems to be unaffected. Have to use the choke for twice longer than previous 2.3/4 setting. Even then when you start riding for the first 500m the bike feels choppy and can easily stall on its own when idling at a stop sign. After about 1km the bike doesn’t stall and works well. When the oil reaches 40c the bike feels right at home when idling. When bike gets past 60c the bike feels perfectly smooth. Better than the 2.3/4 setting wich felt a bit too rich when fully warmed up. Outside temperature is 19c now. I’m going to insert warmer plugs and see how the bike feels.

Oiled chain. Rebuilt the petcock. Bike starts from first push of a button. Resealed the head gasket with fresh silicone to stop the leak from the right side. Replaced the spark plug connectors. Cleaned spark plugs. It feels more powerful. Set the idle screws back a little to 2.5/8th out.

Oiled chain. Laid the bike on the right side at 10km/h. Low sided trying to avoid the dog the jumped under my wheels. Locked up the rear and the front break while leaning in a turn. Slid for half a meter with my leg under the bike. Got a scratch on the knee. Right flasher lens broke and was replaced. The flasher bent backwards and made a small dent on the gas tank. My foot dented the side airbox cover it was under. Right mirror was turned in and slightly scratched. Throttle cables adjusters got scratched. Small scratches under the right muffler. The result of this fuel up is for 89 octane. Carb is at 2.3/4 turns out. Seems to be fine.

Results of clean spark plugs. End of PRS ride. Mostly 70km/h back country roads and some Hwy. Carb is at 2.3/4 out. It takes a bit longer to warm up and it’s impossible to start without choke even at ~40C oil.

Setting idle jet back a little to 2.3/4, because the spark plugs were dry fouled and matte grey indicating rich mixture and I feel that in moist conditions the air filters are wet and it blocks the air flow making the mixture even richer. I also feel that the bike hesitated when cold or moist a bit too much.

I rode with my wife once and from work and back and to T’s a few times. This is a result of 89 octane gas. Choke use is minimal. Just to make a steady idle for a few minutes. No riding on choke. Clean spark plugs. Clean air filter. Best case scenario, really.

Cleaned and lubbed the air filters. Dealt with a tiny oil leak from the valve cover gasket, by cleaning the gasket from old silicone and oil. Replaced a spring in fuel petcock valve in hope to stop the small leak. Oil 20w-50 semisynthetic And Fram filter replacement.
