I can't remember the last time we had two days in a row that the temps didn't dip below zero! And the snow has been deep and long lasting. I'm glad I have the Blizzaks on! I hope the weather breaks soon. These below 40 mpg tanks suck!

The driving conditions for this tank of fuel was horrible! I had to drive through a blizzard, then multiple days of below zero temps, one day the car ran parked for 20 minutes while I was shoveling the car out, then another snow storm but not a blizzard, so no blowing snow, but still ultra cold and deep snow.

At mile 72375 (1/9/15 4:00pm) the glow plug indicator started flashing while on the highway, lost almost all power and limped to the next exit. Turned the car off, read in the manual that the indicator was Engine Cooling Malfunction. THIS IS INCORRECT it actually indicates a major malfunction, stop and get to technical service ASAP. I started the car and it seemed to run ok, I went 5 miles and it shit again. Stopped and started and it went again for 9 miles, stopped and started engine light came on now and it got me the rest of the way home about 20 miles. I pulled a code with a borrowed code reader and got a P0299 #07ES Turbocharger/Supercharger underboost code. I called Keith at KMH Auto in Lowell. We determined I could drive it to his shop on Monday. I brought it in for what we thought was going to be a wastegate actuator change, but that wasn't it. It ended up being frozen turbo intercooler plumbing. Which VW has a TSB on. I need to look into it. He got it cleaned out by swabbing and running the car with the plumbing not connected and swabbing again. It's been running ok since. The mileage is going to suck though.

Some pretty cold temps for the last part of this tank. Also, it was so cold starting out this morning and I hadn't driven the car in a few days, the brake seemed to be frozen for the first few miles on the morning commute.

71717 Rear brake job. Brought the car in to Topnotch Tire and Auto in Peterborough, NH to have the rear pads and rotors replaced. Jeff and Melissa, as always did a great job. Jeff showed me several of the reasons why it was best to bring the car in to have it done; needing to torch heat a couple of the twelve point star driver brake pad bracket bolts located on the back side of the hub and still needing an impact driver to get them being just one! This is not a seventies or eighties simple car! I think I go my money's worth out of those brake parts though! Nearly 72,000 miles on them! The price listed here for the job includes a Veteran discount. Thanks Jeff and Melissa!

One of the rear brakes is bad. It's grinding and I can hear it when I take off so that must be keeping the mileage down a little bit. I have an appointment on Wednesday to get the rear brakes done. I'd try it myself (pads and rotors) but it's fucking cold and raw out there in the yard!

70,000 mile service done at KMH Auto in Lowell, MA. Kieth runs a great shop and knows his stuff about VW and Audi vehicles. I highly recommend using his services if you are in the area and in need.

At mile 69812 I took off the mastercraft winter tires I had been running and put the Blizzaks from last season on. These tire had been on the other Jetta TDI in the house. I wanted the better tires on that car until we got a new set of Blizzaks. When I took them off earlier this year there was 9,142 miles on them. 2,211 miles went on the tires while on the other Jetta TDI for a total of 11,353 miles on the Blizzaks going in to the winter season.

A lot of shorter trips on this tank. Tires need air, and these Mastercraft Winter tires suck. I think is the worst tank I've ever had on this car!

This tank was wrought with riding behind school buses, in traffic, in heavy downpours, construction zones with scarified pavement etc. It looks like the mileage is going to suck!

I added air to the tires (set at 40 psi now) to see if that makes a difference. They seem a bit stiffer now and I can feel the bumps more, but let's see what it does to the fuel mileage.

First full tank with the new Summer tires on. I set the pressure at 36 when I put them on, I may need to pump them up a little bit to get the best mileage. I think they should be broken in now and perhaps the next tank will be better mileage, plus I will try to not hammer it as much in corners and when using on and off ramps. As for the tires, they are quiet, grippy, smooth riding and when Willy put them on he said they were really round, so putting them on the rim and balancing them was easy.

I put new tires on: 205/55R-16 Pirelli P6000 Asimmetrico tires $99.00 each $396.00 plus $$53.64 shipping from Tire Rack Order Total Including Shipping: $449.64 These are dedicated Summer tires so I'm not sure how long they will last, but from the first hundred miles, they seem pretty nice. The road noise is down considerably, I can still feel the road, they seem responsive. I think they are a little bit lower profile so I'll have to figure out what that does for the fuel mileage rating and what having good tires on does for that matter. 34,762 miles is what I got out of the original stock tires. There was a little bit left before the wear bar, but not much.
