Dealer diagnosed bad AC compressor. At home I determined the failure to be the thermal protection switch on the compressor (apparently a common fault on Hondas in which the switch blows out for no reason). I took the two wires that controlled this part and spliced them together to bridge the switch. AC has worked fine ever since.
