I bought a KLR with engine trouble as a "project", and boy did I ever get one. A past owner had had "valve trouble" (which I think is KLR code for "ran it out of oil") and "rebuilt" the top end. After I discovered that the cylinder was out of round and the second piston ring had been installed upside down, I replaced the cylinder and piston with an Eagle Mike 685 kit. As of Sep 2014, the engine runs strong but still stumbles and I suspect ignition or other electrical trouble. In March 2016, after months of neglect, I finally sold it to someone who I hope will do a better job than me at restoring it to service.
