Dec 19 2018

Finally...figured out the cold start mystery. The Solex "progressive starter mechanism" is defective on many of their carbs. The ports don't line up correctly in choke mode. All carbs. and now corrected and running well. The #3 PSM seems to work the best - that was the one where I drilled a new hole in the brass disc. On the others I just ground a notch in the choke lever on the PSM. Jeep is running good and it appears I have only used about 1/4 qt. in ~450 mi. But hard to say for sure in that the filter lost oil when new. But, I think the crankcase and the filter takes 5 qts. to full. When I show a quart low, I will add a quart and we'll see how many miles have been traveled since the oil change.

Carb #3 (the new Crown) will still not do a cold start. So, removed it and put #2 back on and it runs well. The #3 will be going back to JC Whitney. Ordered a new Omix from CSE, which should be in next week. I believe exactly the same as the crown but with a 5 year warranty. With any luck the cold start will work. BTW, took the Crown cold starter apart and all looked well EXCEPT the hole in the cast body possibly didn't go through correctly to let gas in. Hard to tell for sure, but this would explain the "no choke".

Nov 16 2018

The new carb. was very hard cold starting today - had to put gas into carb. After it warmed up, it ran good and hot start was normal and warm start was normal. Might have to dive into the choke...

Nov 10 2018

This tank was with the #2 carb, and I'm not sure why the mpg's are lower. #1 carb started to not idle. So, put on #2 carb and it runs great. Ordered a new #3 carb. from JC Whitney - Crown brand. It is exactly like #1&2 so I'm sure the Omix and Crown are the same mfg. I put #3 on and so far it runs fine. Had some hesitation at first, but screwing in the air-correction screw seems to have taken care of this Also, I rerouted the oil return line from the filter to go over the alt. bracket. Also, removed skid plate and degreased the TC and elsewhere as best I could of the oil that blew out from when the filter was leaking.

Jeep is running good. Retarded timing to 5btdc to alleviate ping. R&R oil filter with the new OE Fram style. Must tighten lid a lot! Re-secured dipstick tube. Added the new AirAid air filter - seems to work well.

FCT 2018. Week of 4wd and highway miles. Jeep ran great! Changed oil yesterday at 17,650. 4 qts Rotella, 1/2 qt. Bars valve repair. 2650 on oil, used 5.5 qts - ~520 mi/qt.. Not great but better than with the Mobil 1 which may be too "slippery" and getting past valve guides??? Stay tuned...

Jeep is running great. Took in to OR4x4 Wed and had them double check theOD install and it was perfect. They also checked all the wheel bearings and all the grease was like new and adjusted fine. Danny did adjust the brakes and they are now fantastic. I am not backing and brakeing enough, so I need to be better about that. I leaned the timing today to see if I will run cooler. I had it at 10btdc for the NCR and never put it back to 5btdc. Put back to 10 for the FCT. Also, I put new spring shackles on the fronts. Used Stover nuts all around. Should hold position. Threaded bushings and the stover nuts are not tight. Snugged up and then backed off 1/2 turn. I think this will work.

This is the first tank after the NCR, and has the new Over Drive installed. 10% increase in mpg's at least. Jeep is running good. Installed new fuel pump and put C shackles back on the rears. Not sure if I'll change out the fronts. R&R trans fluid with Redline MT90 - synthetic GL4. Smoother shifts when cold is noticeable. Appt. at OR4x4 on Aug. 22 to check my OD install and maybe adj wheel bearings.

Jeep is running good. Ordered Saturn overdrive from KW. 29T, 6 spline. 4-6 weeks. Backed off shackle nuts 1/2 turn from 30 ft/lbs and now no binding! Success! Tightened metal battery tray - no squeak. Made new Alt. bracket for more adjustment tension on belt. Inst new flex steel braided fuel line from the tank to pump. Seems to have corrected hot fuel issues even better than before.

May 3 2018

Jeep running good! I have added 1 qt oil and 1/2 qt. Lubegard Bio-Tech in 800 miles. Brought the level up to the mark above the full mark, which is where it started out new with 5 qts. Also, I filled the old oil pan with water and the pan alone holds 8 qts. min. I think that even with 6 or 7 quarts of oil, no damage could be done and it would still be below the gasket. However, the oil pickup would possibly be under the top level of the oil. I don't know if this would be bad or not.

Jeep is running good. Oil change at 15,000 miles. Used Rotella 15w40 this time. Seems a bit more smoke on start up. Seems to not hold oil press at temp as well as with the Mobil 1 so I think the viscosity thins a bit more than the M1. Waiting for test results from Blackstone. If oil consumption is the same as before (1 qt/400 mi) I may drain and refill with the M1. We'll see.

All 4wd in Black Hills. 24psi worked best for 4 wheeling. 20psi seemed a bit light on sharp rocks.. Towed up with 20 psi and all was good but maybe a bit of scrubbing on turns. 24psi on trip back and had no tire scrub. Jeep ran great. Removed grill screen after first day and no more overly hot temps.
