Well out from the computer's 55.8mpg. Interestingly, this was a strict 55mph economy run, slipstreaming trucks. So the computer should have been roughly right, so what is going on here? Both fill ups today were with an air temperature of around 2 degrees C.

Massive difference between this and claimed consumption of 40.9mpg. Very strange these results at the minute. The claimed consumption should have been about right, as most of the miles were either motorway at 60mph or A-roads at 50-60mph, with hardly any town driving at all. Note: filled up with super unleaded here, hence price.

I'm beginning to wonder if the inconsistent values from brim-to-brim figures (computer values appear OK, but are sometimes out) may be caused by the fuel shut-off device in the filler neck? Perhaps it is less sensitive during colder conditions, resulting in more fuel in and therefore, seemingly lower actual economy versus reported economy on computer. Maybe. Either that or there is some very iffy calibration on some local fuel pumps!

Dec 12 2010

Given the last two strange readings, the most sensible way to look at it is to get the average of these two tanks, which gives 44.5mpg for the trip up and back from Scotland. That seems to be a more likely figure and is consistent with previous data.

Return trip from Scotland. Computer claims 44.3mpg. Note how much better than the last fill up this is!! Last tank was filled in freezing conditions, this one in mild conditions, could that make such a big difference to fuel density, causing one low result and one high one?

Dec 11 2010

Long trip up to Scotland, plus day trip. This seems strange, fuel pump calibration may have been off. Computer recorded 41.5mpg, which should have been close, given the very long 70mph cruise for the entire 470 miles.

Computer said 30mpg, so computer was atypically pessimistic. Very cold weather and lots of short journeys, so low figure is to be expected here.
