Replaced my heavy 15" wheels with some stock 1999 Miata wheels (14"x6", 12.7lbs each) and stock size all-seasons. Now the speedo is perfectly accurate again and might even gain a bit of mileage. The manual steering is a bit easier too.

Jan 30 2011

Detailed exterior and trunk and replaced spark plugs and wires. Compression test checks out good, all 4 between 130 and 140psi.

New driveshaft installed. Test drove. No more squeaking from the U-joints. Cleaned and detailed interior getting ready to put up for sale.

Finally fixed a slow brake fluid leak: replaced a rear caliper. Brakes have plenty of life left so I left them, but I need to repaint a lower A-arm that brake fluid was dripping on. Changed oil too with an expensive WIX filter, recommended to keep away lifter tick. The tick stayed away longer than usual, probably due to the cold weather, but hoping to keep it away longer through the hot season this year.

Noticed that the mazda was losing a bit of coolant. Sunday afternoon exploratory surgery revealed that a pinhole leak in a throttle body coolant line was spraying directly onto the alternator terminal. Two problems solved, total cost $3.38 for a TB gasket and a foot of 3/8" water line. Also the leaking tire had a nail in it; patched up by tire shop, no more leak.

Tonight while removing the intake pipes for some maintenance I found a turbonator! I removed it and am going to superglue it to my toolbox as a trophy.

Dec 20 2009

Worst fuel up yet so I filled the tires up to 38psi. They were still at 30 from when I autocrossed.

Car is showing no codes, and the internet seems to think that the slight puff of a backfire is a characteristic of a small exhaust leak. Can't really hear one, but the car is a bit louder than I think it should be. Note that the backfire is only present when it's 60F+ outside.

Changed plugs, diff oil, tranny oil, shifter turret oil, flushed the coolant, and used fuel system cleaner (both in-tank and direct to fuel rail via compressed air) halfway through this tank. Noticed that after idling with the fuel system cleaner in the rail for about twenty minutes, the fan did not turn on and the car slowly started to overheat (shut it off quickly though). Will need to address this, though even in 110F stop-and-go commuting it has not yet shown any signs of overheating in practice. Car will still make a very slight backfire when shifting while driving it hard at high RPMs, not sure why yet.

Changed the oil at about 150 miles into the tank. Used Shell 5w30 dino oil and a $7.50 filter that the scumbags Mazda dealer sold me, which I don't think is an OEM Mazda part. Valve lifter tick is GONE for now and the car is so much more enjoyable. In other news, commute temps have been in the 100-110F range for the past few days, but there have been no overheating problems (with the car, me is another issue).

Jul 20 2009

Changed all four fuel-ups to read 1.5% more miles -- realized that the stock 185/60/14 tire is 1.5% smaller than the 205/50/15 that is on the car.
