I added 4oz of Marvel Mystery Oil to the engine oil; and 6oz of MMO to the fuel. Use of MMO in the oil will reportedly clean the engine better and help with cold starts - it may also quiet some of the chattering at idle. I also checked the oil level - maybe 7/8 of the way to "FULL"

At approximately 174942, I was warming up the Kia on 29/9/2020 and after going inside to grab a box I came back out to find all the power steering fluid on the ground under it. Due to cold weather and being busy, I was unable to deal with it that week. I pulled it into Don's garage and over a week: 1) I pulled the front end to find and replace the leaking power steering hose (next to and underneath the windshield washer fluid reservoir). It appears to be a metric hose, Don and I fought and stretched an SAE 3/8" hose to get it to fit. 2) I replaced all the spark plugs (which were sooty and gapped way too far) with Denso Long Life Iridium replacements, which should last the life of the car. It now starts and idles MUCH more easily. Approximately $40 with my discount. 3) I also installed 3 VisionX square LED spotlights onto a steel bracket, mounted through the front bumper. I ran the included wiring harness into the cabin and have it on a toggle switch drilled through the dash. The lights were on a killer sale, approximately $240 with the mounting plate. 90 miles of test driving over the next 2 days (including in -25 degree temps; and to Deborah's mountainous home) and the Kia seems to be running rather nicely now.

Feb 10 2020

1) I drove the Kia home from the Motion warehouse on Saturday night 2/8/20 and had the check engine light on for P0106 (which Google says is "Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor" and Kia forums mention can happen after disconnecting the battery). It drove home as smoothly as it has before. 2) On Sunday 2/9/20, after warming the car up for ~20 minutes in +20 degree weather, I walked back outside and it had dumped the entire reservoir of power steering fluid onto the ground. The cause in unclear, and I will not be able to look into this until the weekend ahead. The P0106 check engine light went out without my resetting it or changing anything *AFTER* the power steering fluid let go. The CEL was on when I started the car warming up.

Feb 6 2020

Service at Nolan's of Fairbanks, after my attempt to get the driver's rear wheel hub removed resulted in damage. Work includes: 1) replacing driver's rear CV axle 2) replacing driver's rear ABS sensor ring 3) replacing driver's rear lug nuts 4) replacing/rebuilding driver's rear parking brakes 5) replacing driver's rear wheel hub 6) remove valve cover to investigate the knocking/clattering noise, the rods do not appear to be loose so it is not easily fixed. 7) tested engine compression (it is fine). Ongoing question/concern - there is very high oil blowby pressure, and Nolan thinks it might be caused by the piston rings being worn out based on the compression testing and taking the valve cover off. If this is actually caused by the piston rings being worn, it would require a full engine rebuild to correct. Nolan's suggestion is to keep an eye on the oil (level and for any metal particulate matter) and run it until it finally fails.

1) disassembled driver's door, it is likely that the LED in the mirror turn signal is bad. Reassembled with the existing part 2) repaired driver's side in-headlight turn signal, which previously only had working hazards (the running light and turn signal was nonfunctional). The contact needed to be bent upwards to create better contact. 3) Replaced passenger rear wheel hub - this seems to have reduced the road noise above 30mph but not eliminated it. Based on an additional test drive, it appears likely that the driver's rear wheel hub is also bad. 4) inspected brakes (all of passenger rear + outer pad for the other wheels) and they look to be in great shape. Returned parts.
