Bitter cold. Driving as fast as everyone else. Frequent adjustments to the traffic around. Not much effort to save fuel.

20% fuel cost increase due to Hurricane Harvey. Tire pressure was only 31, so I raised it to 36 after this tank.

Starting with this tank, using new all-season tires instead of the loud snow tires. Was hoping for a gas mileage gain, but it doesn't seem significant. Or, it is small enough that it is lost to changes in air density and tire pressure due to changes in ambient temperature. Those seem to have a much larger effect.

This was 55 miles in town and 290 miles on the highway. All of the highway miles were on an unusually cold day, beginning at 11°F, dropping to -6, then rising to 20. By 20, the instantaneous mileage seemed to be more in the normal range (20-40, but below 10 it barely budged above 25. For this tank, the actual mpg was 23, but the car computer reported 25.

Checked tire pressure once the weather got much colder, added 5 psi to bring it back up to 40 psi. Lots more idling while cleaning the car or organizing to get someplace. A lot of small in-town trips. The good news is that while my old car got better gas mileage on the highway (31-33 vs the RAV's 29) the RAV gets better in-town mileage (24 vs 20). The computer-reported gas mileage continues to be 1 mpg optimistic across the range; i.e., it reports 30 rather than the 29 calculated based on odometer and gas pump numbers, and 25 instead of 24.
